Porsche: a history of
Porsche first came to be back in 1931, offering vehicle development work and consulting but no cars of its own. It wasn’t until after the second world war when Ferry Porsche gained control of his father Ferdinand’s business and made it his mission to build the car of his dreams that the brand began to take off.
Ferry Porsche famously said of his ambitious endeavour: “In the beginning, I looked around and could not find the car I’d been dreaming of: a small, lightweight sports car that uses energy efficiently. So I decided to build it myself.” Inspiring stuff.
Ferry experienced great success with his array of sleek, sexy sports cars which, to this day, look just as at home on the road as they do on the race track. Indeed, perhaps Porsche’s greatest achievement was to combine the heady thrill of the racing car with the practicality of the road car: an everyday sports car, if you will.
During the past 65 years or so Porsche, as a company, has gone through a great deal of changes. However, one thing has remained consistent: their timeless and iconic designs. In 2012 Porsche was bought by Volkswagen for approximately £3.4 billion.
